The Cardiovascular system, also known as the circulatory system, is very important in order for us to get nutrients around the body and to be able to survive. We have veins, arteries, and capillaries running all through our body. Arteries carry blood away from the heart and to the rest of the body. Veins do the opposite and carry the blood back to the heart. Capillaries are very thin. This is where the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen takes place. In the cardiovascular system there are two types of circulation; pulmonary and systemic circulation. Pulmonary is a short path from the heart to the lungs. Systemic takes the blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Our heart is divided into four chambers. The top two chambers are the left and right atria which is where the blood enters the heart. The bottom two chambers are the right and left ventricles. These pump the blood away from the heart.
